Tasty tips to lighten up Christmas fare

Tasty tips to lighten up Christmas fare

You don't have to wait until Jan. 1 to start thinking about losing the extra pounds that have crept onto your scale. Even though the holiday season is known as the least diet-friendly time of the year, we have some sneaky ways to lighten up your Christmas feasting. Best yet, your diet-rebellious holiday guests won't have a clue they are eating fewer calories and less sugar, fat and sodium.

Roast turkey with citrus

Slim, trim turkey tips

Turkey is inherently a healthy choice for Christmas dinner, as long as you don’t slather butter underneath the turkey skin and then add insult to injury by eating the skin. A healthy and even more delicious alternative is to make a thick paste of fresh and dried herbs, spices and olive oil to rub underneath the skin against the flesh of the turkey before roasting. Add even more flavor by shoving a few orange and onion wedges underneath the skin, too. Then skip the skin when it’s time to eat – the turkey meat will have plenty of flavor.

Lighten up pasta dishes

If pasta is your Christmas centerpiece dish, chock it full of vegetables, leafy greens, fresh herbs and lean proteins like shellfish and other seafood. For example, toss pasta with smoked salmon and a generous amount of peas and fresh basil. If you can get away with it, swap in whole grain pasta for regular pasta to add more fiber to your feast. Further, your pasta doesn’t have to swim in creamy sauces – lightly coat pasta and scatter with freshly shaved Parmesan, which will lend creaminess and more flavor.

Get stuffed with meats

A big hunk of beef, leg of lamb or jumbo chicken breast is way too much protein, calories and fat for your body to comfortably digest in a sitting, but you can stretch your protein dollars while making these stately meats healthier by stuffing them with vegetables, herbs and whole grains. Select butterflied meats or cut chicken and pork chops into smaller pieces and pound out to even thickness, and then fill with a saute of plant-based ingredients, roll up the meat, and roast in the oven. Not only are stuffed meats healthier, but they are also uber impressive at the table.

Skinnier stews and soups

Serving a hearty stew or soup for Christmas? Opt for broth-based recipes as opposed to cream-based chowders. Substitute half of the meats with beans and add more vegetables, such as winter squash, carrots and leafy greens to bulk up recipes while cutting down the calories and fat.

Healthier mashed potatoes

Instead of adding a pint of cream and dumping a stick of butter into your mashed potatoes, substitute half of the butter with buttermilk and simultaneously cut back on the cream. Add fresh herbs and roasted garlic to your potatoes to give them flavor for nearly zero calories.

Go with whole grains

Add more fiber to your baked goods by substituting half of the white flour in recipes with whole wheat flour. You can even try swapping white flour out for white whole wheat flour, which results in a lighter texture compared to regular whole wheat flour. Consider grain-based side dishes, such as quinoa, polenta, wild rice or whole wheat couscous. If stuffing is on the menu, use whole grain bread instead of white bread.

Dairy down

In most recipes, you can substitute low-fat dairy for whole milk dairy products. For recipes like lasagna and enchiladas, simply use two-thirds to three-fourths of the cheese called for in the ingredients list .

Shake less salt

Salt is a must-have in the kitchen because it adds flavor and can augment the flavor of other ingredients. However, you don’t usually need as much salt as a recipe calls for. Go with the rule: Start conservatively and salt to taste. In addition, use low-sodium versions of canned goods, such as broth and diced tomatoes, and be sure to rinse the high-sodium liquid from canned beans before you use them.

Serve a green salad

Toss a gourmet mix of salad greens with sun-dried tomatoes, olives, marinated artichoke hearts, red onions and shaved Parmesan to give guests a low-calorie side dish that is also packed with bold flavors. Only lightly drain the sun-dried tomatoes and marinated artichoke hearts and you won’t even need a dressing.

Portion control is king

If you are a holiday guest and have no control over the way the Christmas meal is prepared, simply watch your portions. Before you start piling food on your plate, survey the buffet, decide which foods you really want to eat, and then dole out modest portion sizes. Then make sure you eat slowly and savor every single bite so by the end of your first plate, you’re fully satisfied and have no need to go back for seconds or thirds.

Khloe Kardashian Reacts to Lamar Odom’s Near-Trade: “I Would Go Anywhere”

(GettyImages.com)

The world held its breath last night as Lamar Odom‘s future hung in the balance.

Ultimately, the Los Angeles Lakers did not trade Mr. Khloe Kardashian to New Orleans as part of a deal for Chris Paul.

Both Odom and Kardashian dealt with the roller coaster as his name (and nickname “Lam Lam”) trended for hours on Twitter.

When news first broke that the NBA had nixed the trade, Kardashian retweeted a follower’s message: “Its been confirmed, the deal is off. I pray @RealLamarOdom stays a Laker. Its messed up how they tried to trade him though, hes a beast!!”

Kardashian herself wrote, “I love you Lamar!!!!! There’s NO one like you! I’m so proud to be your wife :)”

When someone suggested she was “scared” about going to New Orleans, she replied, “Not at all! I would go anywhere with my hubby!”

She added, “I ride or die for my Lam! Its where I go… Its who I am with :)… I can survive anywhere… People are acting cray! LOL New Orleans is a great place. As long as I’m with Lam I’m good #bible.”

Meanwhile, Odom was dealing with the night’s confusion on his own Twitter account.

“When a team trades u and it doesn’t go down? Now what?” he wrote.

Later, he tweeted, “I want 2 shout out 2 every1 who shows love! I 4 got there was so many haters! I open the door and b4 I can even wipe my feet on the doormat.”

Odom added, “Im just going 2 stay positive and say thank u! The positive energy is what I live for and the negative energy I will just continue 2 eat!”

Angelina Jolie Gushes Over Brad Pitt, Family

Angelina Jolie Gushes Over Brad Pitt, Family

Angelina Jolie is opening up more these days than ever before.

A few days after appearing on Nightline and addressing the issue of marriage, excerpts from an interview Jolie gave to Marie Claire have become available online.

Angelina Jolie Marie Claire Cover

“He has expanded my life in ways I never imagined," the actress tells the magazine. "We built a family. He is not just the love of my life, he is my family. I hold that very dear. I suppose what I’ve learned from Brad is to be able to have the kind of family whose happiness and well-being comes before your own. I’m very, very grateful to have such a loving family, and I wouldn’t have that without him."

Sounds like she's a fan of the guy, doesn't it?

Jolie also touched on her children (Maddox will "take care" of her when she's sad; Pax is "extremely wild.") and made it sounds like her and Pitt might someday add to their adorable brood.

“Nothing planned at the moment, but we just don’t know," she said. "I could end up pregnant.”

Paring down the extracurricular activities for your stressed out kids

Paring down the extracurricular activities for your stressed out kids

Having extracurricular activities can be so important for kids because the activities can nurture social and physical fitness. But having too many can lead to stressed out kids. Here's how to recognize the symptoms of stress -- and what to do about it.

stressed out girl

In Cate O'Malley's household, there are designated days set aside for doing nothing -- guaranteed downtime built into her family's busy lives. "I've found that kids get too easily swept up into an overscheduled week, and balance is a must for our health and sanity," says O'Malley, who blogs at Sweetnicks.com.

While O'Malley has haven preventative measures against stress, that's not the case for every family. Think your kids might be stressed out? Read on.

Symptoms of stress in kids

If you think your child might be stressed, you should need to know what to look for. Jeremy G. Schneider, MFT, a syndicated columnist and therapist, says that parents can look for two key symptoms of stressed out kids.

Trouble falling asleep can be an indicator. "Kids who are rushed from one activity to another, who don't have any down time, will often have trouble falling asleep at night because they can't wind down," explains Schneider.

Being unusually emotional is another sign. Children without downtime don't have an opportunity to process emotions, Schneider says. "When kids don't have time to process the events of their day -- or their life -- their emotions become clogged and things build up. This makes them more likely to throw temper tantrums, overreact to problems [and] cry over simple things," says Scheider.

De-stressing your stressed out kids

"Ask your child if she feels overloaded between school and activities"

If you think your child or children are stressed out, then it's time to do something. Specifically, remove some of the stress... but how? "Talk with your child: ask her if she feels overloaded between school and activities. It's important to help kids understand their own feelings and realize they have the power to do something about them," explains Schneider.

Helping your stressed out kids fix the situation also teaches them about the importance of downtime. "Helping our kids understand when they’re feeling over-committed and then learning how to cut back on activities provides valuable life-lessons," says Schneider.

More on extracurricular overscheduling >>

What extracurricular activities to cut?

Deciding what to cut from your child’s activities can be tough. Schneider says that parents should decide what activity they'd like to cut, and then talk to their kids. "Kids do need to have some choices in what they participate in -- it helps them feel they have more influence in their lives," says Schneider.

Another option is to preempt stress by scaling back, as O’Malley and other forward-thinking parents do. Mom Patsy Kreitman, who writes Family, Friends and Food, says that she and her husband decided to cut back on their sons' activities this winter. "This gives us time to have dinner as a family, work on homework and study for tests and even have reading time as a family. While we do love the physical activity and the social aspect of having them involved, our feeling was that schoolwork and having time for play dates was equally important," says Kreitman.

Kevin Federline collapses in the Outback!

Kevin Federline collapses in the Outback!

Kevin Federline found out the hard way -- the heat in the Outback of Australia is not for everyone.

Kevin Federline just can't get control of his weight.

The father of Britney Spears' children is taking part in the Australian version of Celebrity Fit Club and the heat proved to be a bit much for the overweight celeb, as he passed out due to the heat.

Kevin Federline is a repeat Celebrity Fit Club offender.

He first appeared on the American VH1 version in 2010 to shed some pounds the public clearly saw he had gained.

Federline is back on the Australian version, Excess Baggage, after gaining back the 30 pounds he lost in 2010, but during the filming in Australia, he collapsed.

Kevin Federline a dad again >>

According to a report from E! News with details displayed on OMG, 33-year-old Kevin Federline recently fell prey to the heat in Outback Western Australia, which is part of the Kimberley region.

According to the report, the area is "widely regarded as one of the most remote and hostile parts of the country."

A medic advised Federline be "taken to a hospital as he was showing signs of heat stress." Don't worry, everything is fine now and he's back to filming.

Kevin Federline debuts new baby >>

We just have to say, the oddest things happen to this man when he does a weight loss show. Remember on the American version when he dramatically ran from a pack of dogs as part of a weekly challenge?

It sure lit a fire under his butt.

Excess Baggage is slated to premiere on Australia's Nine Network in 2012.

Did you follow Kevin Federline's first attempt to lose weight on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club? Watching him try and make peace with Shar Jackson on the show was awkward and entertaining all at the same time.

Do you think despite a temporary set back on the set of Excess Baggage, Federline will lose the weight and keep it off?

Head over to our comments section and sound off!

Christmas vacation

Christmas vacation

The holidays are a time to spend with the family and those you love. But that doesn't mean you need to be cooped up in your house until January. Instead, consider a trip to any one of these top holiday travel destinations.

Scottsdale, Arizona

Scottsdale, AZ

With average temperatures in the low 70s, a winter vacation to Scottsdale is the epitome of “warm welcome.” Take in 65,000 dazzling LED lights at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, where a custom four-story tree is topped with a 5-foot star. Christmas carolers, menorah lightings, spiced cider and a 6-foot gingerbread display are also on deck. For families, the nearby McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park’s holiday light display is a can’t-miss, and the 34th annual Las Noches de Las Luminarias at Desert Botanical Garden is fun for all ages. And the holiday season wouldn’t be complete without some festive music -- check out the Musical Instrument Museum’s line-up of holiday-themed events with sounds from around the world.

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland, OH

How could we not put Cleveland on our holiday travel list? It’s where A Christmas Story was filmed, after all! You can even go see Ralphie’s house in all its splendor now that it’s been restored and turned into a museum. Plus, there are outdoor skating rinks, lighting ceremonies and a ballpark that’s been turned into a winter adventure playground. Through Dec. 20, take a ride on the Polar Express along the rails of the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. While aboard, sport your finest PJs as you and the family sip hot cocoa, nibble on some cookies and enjoy a reading of the classic story. A grand finale with a stop at North Pole Village and visit from Santa himself tops off the experience.

Solvang, California

Solvang, CA

Located in the Santa Ynez Valley, Solvang’s reputation as “Little Denmark” dates back to 1911, when Danish-Americans from the Midwest settled the area. Today, the town’s architecture, churches and public art are awash in Danish culture. There’s even a replica of Copenhagen’s famous 17th century Rundetaarn behind one of the village’s four windmills. During the holidays, Solvang’s residents get into the Christmas spirit with the annual Julefest Celebration. This year marks the Julefest’s centennial so there’s no shortage of activities. Special events include everything from holiday wine tastings to nativity pageants and Danish musical performances.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Lancaster County, PA

We can practically smell the pine trees as we write! Lancaster County’s German heritage makes it a prime destination if you’re looking for a traditional holiday vacation. Lodging deals start at just $99 per night at select hotels, so you’ll have plenty of funds leftover to enjoy quintessential activities like the Country Christmas Village at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum. Here, you’ll take in the splendor of a variety of Christmas trees, including feather trees, upside-down trees and trees made with cotton batting! Downtown Lancaster is a major draw, with open markets and outdoor performances.

Wilmington, North Carolina

Wilmington, NC

Celebrate the season coastal-style in Wilmington, with more than 40 festive events to choose from. Stroll along cobblestone streets decked with holiday wreaths on every lamppost and see the beautiful lights of old Wilmington from a Christmas carriage or trolley tour. Through Dec. 21, the Airlie Gardens are downright enchanting with lighted displays, live music, model trains and periodic visits from Santa. Other celebrations include candlelight tours of downtown, holiday parades, brass concerts and a New Year’s noon fete downtown, where your kids can ring in 2012 at the Children’s Museum of Wilmington.

“Brew” takes on new meaning: Starbucks to offer wine, beer at some Chicago locations

“I’ll have a grande cabernet sauvignon please.” Not sure if that’s how the order process will go, but it might! In 2012, several Starbucks coffee shops in the Chicago area will have a new menu: Beer, wine and small plates will be offered after 2 p.m.

The coffee giant tested the concept in several shops in the Pacific Northwest with success. The new menu will be aimed at increasing evening sales and will also entertain guests with poetry, live music and other live theater. The Chicago-based locations will include existing shops that will be remodeled as well as some that will be newly built.

Only time will tell if Starbucks will expand this concept to a coffee shop near you!

Kris Humphries and His Mom Bake Cookies

Kris Humphries and His Mom Bake Cookies

(ABC)

Like most guys going through a rough breakup, Kris Humphries calms himself by baking holiday cookies with his mother on national television.

The former Mr. Kim Kardashian and doting mom Debra Humphries appeared on “Good Morning America” on Friday to talk about what the future holds, and then whipped up a batch of chocolate chip butter cookies!

Because… why not?

If nothing else, there’s nostalgia in watching Humphries look like he’d rather be anywhere else while getting himself into a sticky mess on TV.

Kris Jenner heads to Miss America Pageant

Kris Jenner heads to Miss America Pageant

Keeping Up with the Kardashians star Kris Jenner is among the celebrities tapped to judge next month's Miss America pageant in Las Vegas.

Kardashian family matriarch Kris Jenner knows a thing or two about beautiful girls: She's raised five! Now the money-making mama of the reality syndicate is going to put her knowledge to work as a judge for the 2012 Miss America Pageant.

Jenner will join actress Teri Polo, Good Morning America anchor Lara Spencer, Dancing With the Stars pro Mark Ballas, Bachelor executive producer Mike Fleiss, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition host Chris Powell and Raul de Molina, a former photographer and host of the Univision entertainment news show El Gordo y la Flaca on the judges' panel of this year's pageant.

Kris made the big pageant announcement in a Twitter posting this week.

The pageant, airing live Jan. 14 from the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, will be hosted by Bachelor frontman Chris Harrison.

Meanwhile, Kris spoke about her daughter Kourtney's recent pregnancy announcement to reporters at a Women in Entertainment breakfast on Wednesday, making a rather hilarious suggestion as to an appropriate baby name.

Kris Jenner: I could have saved Nicole Brown Simpson >>

"It should be called Kris, of course!" laughed Kris, when asked her opinion on the matter.

Hold on a second. Is Mama Jenner suggesting naming her grandkid after herself? Or was that a rather cheeky slip about daughter Kim's two-minute-marriage to Kris Humphries?

Wouldn't it be a hoot to name that kid after the saga that is Auntie Kim's pending divorce?

Kris has been vocal about wanting Kourtney to marry her boyfriend and baby daddy, Scott Disick. But she now admits she doesn't "think it's in the cards for them."

Kris Humphries dodges in first post-split interview with GMA

Kris Humphries dodges in first post-split interview with GMA

Hoop star Kris Humphries may have missed his true athletic calling: Dodgeball! The estranged husband of socialite Kim Kardashian avoided all talk of the reality star in his first interview since the couple called time on their two-month marriage.

How's Ole Humphy been holding up since getting a swift kick to the curb from Kim Kardashian's pointy stiletto?

Well enough to savor the gooey goodness of mom's homemade cookies!

Kris Humphries appeared in his first TV interview since splitting from the reality socialite on Good Morning America Friday.

Last we heard, Kris wanted his prenuptial agreement with Kim dismissed so he could talk about their brief marriage to the press. A confidentiality clause in the prenup reportedly prevents the hoopster from speaking to the media about his estranged bride.

"The confidentiality aspect of the prenup is extensive and was created just in case things went bad, neither Kim nor Kris could discuss their relationship to the media..." an insider told Radar Online last week.

So it should come as little surprise that Kris, never one to mince words, was unusually quiet as he and his mom, Debra, appeared on the breakfast show to bake cookies during a segment sponsored by Taste of Home magazine.

The basketballer ducked every question thrown at him about his short-lived melodrama with Kardashian by GMA's Josh Elliott.

"It's going good. I'm excited to be close to playing basketball. In the off-season, I've doing a lot of work with my foundation, spending time with my family, working on my game a lot," he replied when Elliott asked how he's been handling his divorce.

Kris Humphries: Gay? Not so fast >>

"What has the divorce process been like?" Josh asked.

"It's been different, but through everything I've just focused on family and preparing for basketball. Basketball is something I take really serious and I continue to do that. You know, just moving forward," Kris replied.

What did he think when Kim filed for divorce?

"For me, it's just certain things happen in life and you gotta move forward. I'm excited to be where I'm at right now with the NBA season and I'm ready to go," Kris shot back.

Why did he file for an annulment?

"I'm really right now focused on basketball and other things will take care of themselves, you know. For most people, camp starts today, 4 p.m. Hopefully I'll be on a team soon and ready to go," Humphries answered.

Debra was just as cryptic in her responses.

"I think for us, the important thing is to stay close as a family through the ups and downs that come," she said curtly.

"Our faith in God carried us through all these times. We try to focus on being thankful for things and being positive... We're not trying to look back, we're focusing on moving forward."

What impact did having reality cameras shadowing him have on his relationship? Elliott quizzed.

"I can't say for sure. It's the only time I've been married," the 26-year-old answered.

"I've been in front of cameras on the NBA since I was 19. It's a different level, but for me it's about moving forward and give back to my foundation, focusing on childhood obesity. Life is more about how you can help other people and making the most out of your platform."

Has his public image taken a hit?

"I think if people know me and know who I am and what I stand for, I think they'll know I love to give back. I'm a fun guy. I don't really play into all the gossip that takes place. It's life."

Kris Humphries is a flirting farter >>

Does he still love Kim?

Humphries chuckled a bit, before saying, "I'm focused on just what I can control, which is being ready to play ball and supporting my mom and her cookie baking."

Humphries filed a petition to have the marriage annulled last month.

He lists the date of separation as Oct. 31, 2011 and the reason for the split as "fraud." Kris believes his entire romance with Kim was simply an elaborate storyline for her popular E! reality franchise.

The pro baller has requested that a legal separation be granted if an annulment is denied.

Want to smell like Madonna? You can... soon

Want to smell like Madonna? You can... soon

Ever wonder what Madonna smells like? We haven't either. We'll find out soon, though – the iconic singer is releasing a new fragrance!

Madonna is releasing a fragrance

It seems like this is the career path for every star these days: Get famous; make lots of money; release fragrance; make more cash.

Don't believe us? Let's name a few of the countless celebrities with fragrances: Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Faith Hill, Mariah Carey, Selena Gomez... you get the idea.

There's one major name missing from the list, though: Madonna.

Madge came up in the industry back in the day when celebrities could only rely on their albums and touring to make beaucoup bucks. Things are a'changin' though – the mother of Lola and connoisseur of all things glam is making her own fragrance.

"I have always been obsessed by fragrance and for years wanted to create something personal that was an expression of me but that other people could relate to as well. Something honest, and yet daring, hence the name Truth or Dare," Madonna told Women's Wear Daily of her fragrance, calling Truth or Dare

Her partner in the venture – Coty – describes the scent as a "signature floral fragrance. Its unique blend of narcotic florals, balanced with addictive woods and vanilla, creates a scent that is timeless, yet contemporary, simultaneously dark and light. The bottle plays up the Truth or Dare duality - a classic and sophisticated shape, with modern and edgy detailing."

The scent will be available at retail stores, including Macy's, for $39, $55 and $68, depending on size. The line also includes body lotion for $28 and shower gel for $24.

This is a perfect tie-in for Madonna's youth clothing line – Material Girl – and her upcoming "mature woman" clothing line, also named Truth or Dare.

"[Truth or Dare] will be designed to showcase the duality of her image, a power icon intertwined with feminine beauty," WWD wrote after the singer announced the collection. The perfume is up first, followed by accessories, shoes and handbags that target women ages 27-50.

Why older women? Well, mama Madonna realizes she can no longer keep up with the fashionistas of today. Instead, she leaves the trendsetting to her daughter, 14-year-old Lourdes Leon.

"I am boring basically. [Lola] reminds me of me when I was younger. She just goes for it and tries different things. It doesn't look like she thought too much about it," Madonna told Billboard last year.

"That is how I used to be, but after years and years of everybody commenting on the way I look and dress and being photographed, one starts to become self-conscious and starts to plan things more. You end up judging yourself more, what looks good and what doesn't."

Angelina Jolie: Brad Pitt “Is Really the Only Person I Talk To”

Angelina Jolie: Brad Pitt “Is Really the Only Person I Talk To”

(Marie Claire)

Angelina Jolie opens up about Brad Pitt and her social life — or lack there of — in the January issue of Marie Claire.

The former wild child turned humanitarian and mom of six tells the mag, "I have a few girlfriends… I stay at home a lot, I'm just not very social… I don't have a lot of friends I talk to.”

Jolie says Pitt “is really the only person I talk to… He has expanded my life in ways I never imagined,” adding, “He is not just the love of my life, he is my family.”

The screen siren, who just made her directorial debut with In The Land of Blood and Honey, says, “I suppose what I've learned from Brad is to be able to have the kind of family whose happiness and well-being comes before your own. I'm very, very grateful to have such a loving family, and I wouldn't have that without him."

And while she has "nothing planned at the moment” in terms of expanding their brood, she says, “I just don't know. I could end up pregnant."

The magazine hits newsstands in mid-December.

Rachel Crow sent home in shocking X Factor elimination

Rachel Crow sent home in shocking X Factor elimination

In a shocking X Factor elimination, 13-year-old powerhouse Rachel Crow was sent packing from the FOX talent show on Thursday. Crow's exit followed an explosive decision by judge Nicole Scherzinger. Will the increasingly unpopular Pussycat Doll be the next star sent packing?

Five X Factor finalists — Melanie Amaro, Josh Krajcik, Chris Rene, Rachel Crow and Marcus Canty — took the stage on Thursday's highly emotional results show.

But only one went home.

Both Crow and Canty found themselves in the bottom two, but it was fan-favorite Rachel who was eliminated after the four judges deadlocked over the singers' "save-me songs."

Marcus belted out a version of "I'm Going Down" by Mary J. Blige, who performed earlier in the night. Rachel sang "I'd Rather Go Blind" by Etta James.

Rachel Crow's troubled past revealed >>

When it was time for the judges to cast their votes, Simon Cowell threw his support behind his protégé Crow. Paula Abdul concurred.

L.A. Reid, on the other hand, sided with his charge, Marcus, one of the show's two least-favorite acts three weeks running.

Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger was given the deciding vote. But she had a difficult time choosing between the two contestants on the chopping block.

"I can't make this decision because... I know how it feels and I love and adore both of you. I have to go to deadlock," the singer cried.

"Please don’t cry," Rachel told Nicole from the stage, grabbing host Steve Jones' mic. "It's OK, I'm good with anything."

Simon Cowell orders added security for his X Factor girls >>

Nicole then voted for Rachel to go home, tying things up two votes each.

“I’m gonna — I don’t wanna… send you home Rachel, I just don’t wanna, so I’m — the act that I’m gonna have to send home is Rachel,” Nicole said, immediately eliciting boos from the audience.

"That means the judges lose their power and we look back at how you at home voted. The act that got the lowest amount of votes will be leaving the competition," Jones explained.

Rachel, 13, collapsed in a fit of tears upon learning that she'd been taken out of contention for the X Factor grand prize: a $5 million recording contract.

The audience jeered and booed Nicole as the young girl dissolved into sobs.

Crow eventually composed herself and told the audience, "I love you so much, everybody, for voting for me and thank you for giving me this because without you I am nothing. I hope this is not my ending. I know it's not and I will go so far. I promise you!"

Cowell added, "She went out on the highest she could have gone out. We're going to be hearing a lot more from Rachel Crow, I can give you my word on that."

When asked by Steve if she wanted to make any comments, Nicole turned away after being booed by the crowd.

Last week, Scherzinger helped rally another mob of angry fans when she and Abdul kicked teen singer Drew Ryniewicz off the show. Both women were on the receiving end of death threats and vicious commentary on Facebook and Twitter over their controversial decision to instead keep Canty in the competition over Drew.

According to British weekly Now Magazine, Cowell is mulling a possible casting swap that would send Scherzinger — originally tapped as an X Factor co-host — back to the show's London faction. X Factor UK judge Kelly Rowland, a former Destiny's Child girl bander, would then replace her on the Los Angeles-based show.

"Simon thinks [Rowland] will be amazing on the US show," said an insider, who noted that Scherzinger has had a "mixed reaction in the U.S."

Sinead O'Connor: Married to Barry Herridge!

Sinead O'Connor: Married to Barry Herridge!

Sinead O'Connor tied the knot yesterday. The lucky man is Barry Herridge.

Just as she'd planned, the singer and her fiance said "I do" in quite the non-traditional fashion - while sitting in the back of a pink Cadillac in Las Vegas.

"She wanted to do the whole thing in a Cadillac. That was her thing," a source said of the ceremony, which began with the pair arriving around 7 p.m.

Sinead O'Connor, Barry Herridge

In a pink, low-cut dress revealing her tattoos, the "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer filled out paperwork before settling into the Caddy on the Vegas Strip.

"It wasn't a traditional dress, but it wasn't a traditional wedding either," says the source. "Sinead cried during the vows and had to wipe her eyes."

After the 10 minute ceremony, Sinead O'Connor and her new husband lit candles as employees of the chapel sang "Happy Birthday" to the bride.

It was also her 45th birthday, after all!

Celeb moms use old wives’ tales to predict baby’s gender

Celeb moms use old wives’ tales to predict baby’s gender

From Hilary Duff to Kate Hudson, celebrity moms are using old wives' tales to predict the gender of their babies. Check out some of our favorite tricks to try to guess the sex of your baby.

guessing baby's gender

Are you having trouble waiting until your 18-20 week ultrasound to find out the sex of your baby? Celebrity moms are falling back on old wives’ tales to help predict the gender of their babies. These tricks are not always accurate, but they sure are fun!

Celeb mom prediction tricks

When Kate Hudson was pregnant with her second child, she told the Today show she used old wives’ tales to try to predict the sex of her baby.

“You get a ring and [you tie a strand of] your hair and put it over your belly and it swings,” she said. “Everybody has different methods... it goes in a circle if it’s a girl and it usually goes back and forth if it’s a boy. It’s saying it’s a girl, and I’m carrying so differently than I did with Ryder.”

Old wives’ tales predict if you are carrying low you are having a boy, while carrying high means you are having a girl.

Was Hudson’s prediction of a girl accurate? She gave birth to her second boy, Bingham, in July.

Jessica Simpson is using her intuition to predict her baby’s sex. “I think it’s a girl,” she recently confessed. Her fiance Eric Johnson, however, thinks it is a boy.

Hilary Duff is having sweet pregnancy cravings, saying she is “always up for Red Hots, which is weird because I’ve never liked them before.” If the age-old predictions are accurate, she should be having a boy, and she recently revealed she is having a boy!

Fun old wives’ tales

Here are some of our favorite old wives’ tales for predicting the sex of the baby. Be forewarned: these are not always accurate, so don’t stock up on pink or blue quite yet!

 • Chinese Conception Chart: the ancient chart uses age and month of conception to predict gender
 • Heart rate: less than 140 beats per minute means it's a girl and more than 140 beats per minute means it's a boy
 • Sweet and sour: craving salty or sour foods means it's a boy and sweet foods means it's a girl
 • Face: if your nose spreads, it means you're having a boy and if your face breaks out, it means you're having a girl
 • Hair: if hair grows faster on your legs, it means you're having a boy, but if your hair sprouts red highlights, it means you're having a girl
 • Pain/mood: If you experience increased headaches, you're having a boy while moodniess means you're having a girl
 • Drano gender prediction: mix urine with Drano. If it is brown after 10 seconds, it is a boy. If there is no color change, it is a girl.

Teaching compassion through the holidays

Teaching compassion through the holidays

As the holiday season moves into full swing, it's often the time of the year that brings to mind what you can get, get, get... and subsequently forget about the true spirit of the season! This year, encourage every member of your family, no matter what age, to be compassionate and to give of themselves during the holidays. The lessons learned will leave a lasting impression throughout the year and bring you even closer together as a family.

Giving Back

As the holiday season moves into full swing, it is often the time of the year that brings to mind what you can get, get, get... and subsequently forget about the true spirit of the season! This year, encourage every member of your family, no matter what age, to be compassionate and to give of themselves during the holidays. The lessons learned will leave a lasting impression throughout the year and bring you even closer together as a family.

Give thanks

Large or small, expressing thankfulness for the blessings in your life is important for you to model for even the youngest member of your family -- and not just on one day in November. Children need to know that the aspects of your life that are often taken for granted, such as running water, a roof over their heads, a warm place to sleep, and food on the table, are gifts. While it is customary to give thanks for family, friends and loved ones, making it a habit to count your blessings out loud all year round is just as essential to foster a sense of gratitude in your children.

Volunteer

As a family, take a break from the hustle and bustle by finding an organization with which to volunteer your time during the holidays, such as a soup kitchen, food pantry or even a nursing home where you can visit the residents. By giving of your time together as a family, you are encouraging selflessness and a sense of gratefulness for all that you have in your life. If you can afford to assist a needy family in your area, whether through a nonprofit organization or a church, synagogue or mosque, you can also have your children pick out and help wrap gifts for the family who would otherwise be going without this season. Make it fun -- adopt a family with children similar in age to your children, and have them shop with you to pick out a gift that they know the child their own age would love to receive. A good place to start is the Salvation Army, who has partnered with JCPenney this year to create The Salvation Army Angel Giving Tree, which helps you to adopt an angel in your area, making their holiday merry and bright. You can adopt a group or individual, and JCPenney offers free shipping on purchases for your angel.

Go shopping -- for a cause

Find an organization that gives back when shopping this season. For instance, Krochet Kids International sells warm and snuggly knitted hats, stylish tees, hoodies, tote bags and more as gift ideas. This non-profit organization gives fair-wage crocheting jobs to women in Uganda and Peru, offering them economic stability in hopes of ending the cycle of poverty. Their motto? Buy a hat, change a life.

CLAIM: Lady Gaga Fears She’ll Die “Like Princess Diana”

CLAIM: Lady Gaga Fears She’ll Die “Like Princess Diana”

(The Sun)

Lady Gaga is releasing a song about the death of Princess Diana,” reports The Sun, which claims the “Paparazzi” singer believes “she may end up dying in the same way” as the late royal.

According to a supposed source for the paper, “Gaga says she sees herself as a ‘pop version’ of Diana,” who died in a tragic car crash in 1997 after being chased by photographers in Paris.

The so-called “source” says, ”Gaga has always been absolutely fixated on Diana and sees herself as a 21st-century incarnation of her,” explaining, ”She knows she is almost as recognisable as Diana and is hounded by photographers and fans on the same level.”

“Gaga has had dreams about dying the same way as her and has genuine fears that her fame could literally kill her, either in a chase or at the hands of crazies,” adds the insider.

The tabloid goes on to say that the singer previewed her new Princess Di-inspired track “to a select few last month,” and one critic supposedly described it as packed with “bitter lyrics” and a “trademark catchy chorus.”

So, when is Gaga going to release the new tune?

About one week from… NEVER.

A rep for Gaga tells Gossip Cop the report about the upcoming song, as well as the singer’s supposed preoccupation with Diana’s death, are both “not true.”
