In a battle among sequels, it’s Sherlock on top.
Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows is expected to win the weekend box office, debuting to approximately $42 million.
Robert Downey, Jr.‘s detective will finish ahead of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked ($26 million) and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol ($12 million), although it should be noted that the Tom Cruise spy movie is still in somewhat limited release.
Meanwhile, star- and plot-packed romantic comedy New Year’s Eve will slide to #4, taking in roughly $7.5 million in its second week.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 ($4.2 million) should have enough juice left in its fifth week to stay ahead of The Sitter ($3.9 million).
Three kiddie flicks are next, with Arthur Christmas, Hugo and The Muppets all looking at weekend hauls of approximately $3.5 million.
Young Adult, starring Charlize Theron, is also in the $3.5 million neighborhood.
Gossip Cop will have updates.
