Barry Bonds was sentenced to 30 days of house arrest and two years’ probation on Friday for giving misleading grand jury testimony during a 2003 federal investigation into performance-enhancing drug use among baseball players.

He was also fined $4,000.

Baseball’s all-time home run leader was convicted of felony obstruction of justice last April.

At the time, the jury was unable to decide whether Bonds had lied to grand jurors about knowingly taking steroids and human growth hormone, letting him off the hook on perjury charges.

But his evasive responses were enough to convict Bonds on obstruction.

Prosecutors had sought a 15-month jail sentence for Bonds, but Judge Susan Illston chose against the stiffer sentence.

Bonds hit 762 home runs during an awards-filled career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants, but alleged steroid use has tarnished his legacy.
